Begin your trip in the gateway to Germany, Frankfurt, where you can spend some time visiting the Museum of Modern Art or St Paul's Church. From Frankfurt head to the town where Martin Luther translated the Bible into German, and later visit Weimar, the center of the Bauhaus movement which revolutionized art, architecture and design and was also home to some of the country's most famous citizens. Onward to Leipzig and its Christmas market known for its large tree. Tour the centuries old porcelain factory in Meissen, and then be surprised when you arrive in Dresden. It became infamous for the bombing the city suffered in WWII, yet is a lovely place with fine examples of Baroque architecture. Enjoy an evening visit to the city Christmas market named after the local cake Striezel which includes dried fruit and marzipan and is topped with powdered sugar. Feel like you are in Santa's workshop while visiting Seiffen, a country village known for making wooden toys. Continue through the heavily forested Ore Mountains to Annaberg to enjoy one of the prettiest Christmas markets in the country. Then view another type of handicraft, lacemaking in the town of Plauen. The imperial city of Bamberg is home to over eight breweries, a stately Town Hall and a stunning Cathedral. Time for a wee bit more shopping at the town's Christmas market or admire the hundreds of nativity scenes set up around the town, before returning to Frankfurt. Having shopped for everyone at the Christmas markets, maybe it's time to pick something up something special for yourself on Frankfurt's Zeil Street, home to exclusive boutiques.
