Start your journey in Lima, the economic, cultural and political center of
Peru. People watch at the Plaza Mayor, contemplate the intricate details of the
Church of San Francisco and tuck into seafood at one of the city's cevicherÃas.
Spend two nights in Cusco exploring the character of the town and choosing
handicrafts at the Centro Artisanal market before boarding the train to Machu
Picchu Pueblo, the gateway to the sacred city of the Incas. Machu Picchu, the
legendary city in the heart of the Andes, was abandoned at the time of the
Spanish invasion, and lay forgotten for centuries. In 1911 archeologist Hiram
Bingham unearthed the lost city. Contemplate whether it was built as a royal
retreat, an astronomical station or religious place as evidenced by the Temple
of the Moon and Hitching Post of the Sun. Regardless of its original purpose,
it's a fascinating place and its buildings, including temples, palaces, houses
and baths, reveal the Incan skill at assembling without mortar. A completely
self-contained city, the agricultural terraces surrounding the site grew crops
sufficient to feed the population and natural springs supplied
water.
