During this small group walking tour you will explore the majestic and extensive remains of the largest ancient empire as our guide takes you inside the Colosseum and Roman Forum, bringing to life the sights and sounds that filled these areas two millennia ago. In the valley of the Roman Forum you will walk the square where Julius Caesar, Cicero and Augustus gave their famous speeches. Your feet will touch the stones along the Via Sacra which still preserve the signs of carriage wheels from 2,000 years ago. You'll explore the Colosseum, an enormous amphitheater built by the Flavian emperors who wanted to provide Rome with a public gift on the land that had been stolen from them centuries before. In the Colosseum you will overlook the arena where gladiators fought and died - traditional games in ancient Roman society.
Inside the Colosseum, we will have the special opportunity to visit the vast network of tunnels, rooms, cells and passages underneath which housed the wild beasts, gladiators, stage-props and slaves necessary to run the horrific activities in the area above. Also, with special access to the third ring of the Colosseum, we will have an extraordinary view over the city and a better understanding of the building's breathtaking architecture. This special visit helps us deepen our understanding of the games' organization, efficiency and all the strategies the Romans developed to maximize the dramatic experience of the spectators.
Then, we venture even further into the history of the Roman Empire, covering that which has survived of the enormous palaces of the emperors on the Palatine Hill. The Palatine has a wonderful view of the Tiber River, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus and the entire city and also includes the preserved remnants of the huts of the founders of the Rome dating back to the 8th century BC. This tour allows you to deepen your understanding of the private and intimate aspects of Roman daily life after having explored the public side of it in the Forum and the Colosseum.
