Macedonia Travel Guide
Travel to Macedonia Macedonia is a unique country filled with picturesque orchards and vineyards, stunning medieval monasteries, and welcoming people.

Two of Macedonia's most popular monasteries are the Sveti Jovan Bigorski Monastery and the Treskavec Monastery.

Sveti Jovan Bigorski is a fully working monastery and one of the most visited in Macedonia. Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, Sveit Jovan Bigorski houses one of the most valuable wood-carved iconostasis in the orthodox religion. This beautiful iconostasis features over 200 human figures and 500 animals and attracts many visitors each year to the monastery.

Treskavec Monastery is one of the most brilliant monasteries in Macedonia. Set in the rocky mountains, Treskavec Monastery appears out of the mountains filled with color and stunning design. Reaching this monastery can be tricky, but for the avid traveler it should not be a problem.

Aside from the Macedonia's famed monasteries, the country is home to two charming cities, Ohrid and Skopje. Both cities offer a distinctive and delightful look into the life of Macedonians.

Nearly all travelers to Macedonia spend some time in Ohrid. Its outstanding architecture, Byzantine churches, pleasant cobblestone streets, and beaches are quite an attraction. After a morning exploring the city's art galleries, spend the afternoon relaxing on the waters of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes.

For a fantastic example of Macedonian architecture, visit the 1827 National Museum. Inside you will find everything from an archaeological display to ethnographic information. It is easy to loose yourself in this museum and spend hours exploring the history of Macedonia.

After visiting the National Museum, head to the 10th century Car Samoil's Castle, one of Ohrid's highlights. The view from atop this castle is perfect for capturing the scenic beauty of Ohrid.

Macedonia's capital, Skopje, is located on the Vardar River and is easily explored by foot. Small shops and teahouses are quaint and fun to explore. One of the city's must-see attractions is the Church of Sveti Spas. Built below ground, the church is features a stunning iconostasis.

Stunning architecture and amazing sites make Macedonia an exciting visit for world travelers. It is the friendly people of this welcoming country that makes any visit memorable.
