With over 7000 years of history to explore, the islands of Malta are a fascinating place to travel. Like a giant open-air museum, so much of Malta’s past is still visible today. Explore some of the oldest structures in the world in Malta. Retrace the footsteps of St. Paul, visit the grounds of the crusades, or explore medieval dungeons. Malta’s scenery is truly amazing. The architecture of the island provides a spectacular backdrop, as the stone buildings reflect off the Mediterranean Sea.

This was a wonderful week-long vacation. Malta offers a gread combination of interesting historical sites and relaxation. The flights were good, generally on time. Slightly delayed leaving Malta but no problem with the connection in Frankfurt. The local representative was OK--I wasn't that interested in signing up for lots of tours -- did do two through her but the rest on my own. The October weather was superb--in the 70's and sunny. I found the people friendly and engaging.

Malta is beautiful. But this trip presented some challenges. Transfer time in Frankfurt airport was not adequate on return flight. Three seperate security checks and each detained us. The transfer service to & From the airport was wonderful. But the Sliema Chalet Hotel was sad. The room was neither clean nor appropriately maintained. Plaster falling down from ceiling in bath, broken fixtures and draperies, an air conditioning system which barely functioned (not a problem in November - we slept with the balcony door opened, but no screen). Extra charges for phone and TV (although TV was supposed to be free - there was a note hanging on the desk clerk station, but we were still told we had to pay) The local agency for GoToday tried to visit us shortly after we arrived to sell us tour packages. That was irritating when we just wanted to rest.
Our suggestion: Go to Malta but stay somewhere else.

Malta is amazing- the ruins are a must-see. There are great walking tours and Valletta is very accessible by bus. We booked the package with the Sliema Chalet hotel, and the hotel was atrocious. The service was rude, the toilet didn't function, the heat is provided by a ceiling unit, and our room never got warmer than 58 degrees. You MUST turn off the heat in order to leave the room, so it never got warm. This might work ok in the summer, but it was horrendous in the winter. I am convinced we were issued the worst room in the hotel - the view overlooked the roof of the breakfast room and other interior walls. The forced us to turn in the key at the desk EVERY time we left the hotel. The adjoining restaurant was ok. Malta is a great choice, the package a great value, but this hotel is appallingly bad. (Its location is good, though. It's right on the bus line and can be easily spotted by the sign out front that says "Hotel Pizza Rant".)
