The primarily Buddhist nation of Cambodia - which borders Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand – was home to the fascinating Khmer Empire, which beginning in the 9th century reigned for over half a millennium. One of the most powerful empires to ever exist in Southeast Asia, its kings controlled territory in what is today’s Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. During this escorted tour, all four nights will be spent in the city of Siem Reap, which boasts a lovely Old French Quarter from the colonial era as well as lively local markets. Siem Reap is best known however for being the gateway to the Angkor region – which is where your sightseeing will take place during your time in Cambodia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. It houses the magnificent archeological ruins of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire including the Temple of Angkor Wat, the fortified city of Angkor Thom as well as the mysterious Bayon Temple . You will also visit Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei Temple (a jewel of classical Khmer art), the Roluos Group Temples, Ta Som, Neak Pean Temple and Preah Khan.
